What the South Coast jobs market looks like in 2026

27 June 2026

Salary inflation has cooled, but hybrid expectations are still rising. A short read on what we're seeing in Hampshire and Dorset hiring right now.

Salary inflation has finally stabilised across most of the roles we recruit on the South Coast. After two years of aggressive upward pressure, mid‑level finance, HR and operations salaries in Portsmouth, Southampton and the wider Hampshire region are now landing within 3–5% of 2023–2024 levels. The only outlier is specialist commercial roles, where demand still outweighs supply and candidates continue to hold the advantage.

Alongside salary stabilisation, hybrid working expectations have shifted even further toward candidates. Two days in the office is now the median requirement for most professional services roles across the South Coast. Organisations still insisting on three or four days are seeing a measurable drop‑off in applicant numbers, slower shortlists and higher rejection rates — especially in competitive talent markets.

What this means for employers hiring on the South Coast

  • Pay benchmarks are stable. You no longer need to chase inflated salary trends to stay competitive, but you do need to ensure your banding is aligned with current market data.
  • Flexibility is now the differentiator. Hybrid working has become a core part of the value proposition. Candidates are actively filtering roles based on office expectations, and businesses with rigid policies are losing out.
  • Hybrid policy is now a strategic hiring tool. Before launching any recruitment process – particularly in finance, HR, operations or commercial roles — audit your hybrid model. If your policy is out of step with the market, your hiring outcomes will be too.

The takeaway: salary stability has returned, but flexibility is the new battleground. South Coast employers who adapt their hybrid expectations will see stronger pipelines, faster processes and significantly better candidate engagement.
